From our friends at Red Fox Coffee Merchants:
Like many other coffee producers, Juan was introduced to coffee from his parents.
In 1990, his parents bought over three hectares of land in the community of Santa
Maria which is in Jaén. Juan eventually took over the family farm and in 2013 he
began implementing new processing procedures and introducing new varieties.
Since then, he has been awarded with increased income and recognition during
the Cup of Excellence. Not only does Juan produce coffee, he also distills sugar
cane to make liquor. The name of the drink, that is consumed by locals and Juan’s
guests is called “yonque”.
With 425 members, Aroma de Valle producer group represents some of the greatest
coffee in northern Peru, uniting producers in Jaen, San Igancio, and Cutervo. Since
their founding in 2015, they’ve worked to promote the development of top-quality
coffee, providing economic and social support for producers and their families
with a focus on environmental sustainability.
With 80% of their land rising above 1700 masl and zeniths as high as 2100 masl,
it’s not surprising that they’ve successfully been able to focus on ensuring that
all of their coffees hit the 85+ cup score benchmark. With a focus on democracy
and loyalty, the quality of their coffees reflects their belief that coffee not only
contributes to socio-economic growth for producing members, but also personal
growth: in their own words, “a participatory social identity even inside their own
families.”
With flavor profiles ranging from milk chocolate and nougat to plum and red
cherry all the way to grapefruit and jasmine, Aroma de Valle showcases how a
focus on community translates to a stellar cup that everyone involved can be
proud to enjoy.
